Love Food Hate Waste

LFHWgraphicGreen.jpg

According to the NSW EPA, every year, NSW households throw away more than 800,000 tonnes of edible food! Commercial and industrial businesses in Sydney sent 190,000 tonnes of food waste to landfill in 2014!

The Qur'an tells us not to waste food

“Eat and drink but waste not by extravagance,
certainly He (Allah) likes not those who waste by extravagance"
(Al-A'raf - 7:31).

MAA has received an Environmental Trust grant as part of the Love Food Hate Waste Program. With this grant we are working to close the loop by strategically intervening on the food waste issue in our community.

Closing the Loop on Food Waste in our Community

We started closing the gap on food waste in April 2017, by educating local NGOs on how to reduce food waste in their organisations. Some participating organisations included Brothers in NeedMountaha's Helping HandGiving Back Australia, In Need of Help, and City Food 2U.

What Can You Do?

  • Shop to your needs - make a shopping list
  • Don’t shop while your hungry
  • Ask for your leftovers when eating out
  • Reuse your leftovers - it will save you time, money, effort, and food waste.

We are also conducting community workshops around Sydney thorughout May 2017, to reduce food waste in households- especially during Ramadan. Read More about our Community Workshops.

We are visiting local businesses and educating them about reducing food waste in their restaurants and factories. Read More about how you can reduce food waste in your business.

And we are running a Ramadan awareness campaign, with weekly Loving Leftovers competition and prizes up for grabs. Click the image to enter the competition.
